NFHS track and field athletes participated in the second of four “Fleet Feet Series” track meets of the 2012-23 indoor season, held at JDL Fast Track, here in Winston-Salem on Tuesday December 18. After finishing a disappointing fourth in the 4 x 800m (although they did run a season best); the boys’ 4 x 400m relay lead by senior Marvin Fulwood provided an exciting finale to the meet. Gevontae Hardy, Marvin Fulwood, Brandon Gambrell and Steve Stowe had to fight off an early challenge by West Forsyth, but by the middle of the second leg, North was in control. The quartet ran another season best time, shattering their previous best by three seconds exactly, qualifying them for the state championship in February 2013.
Sophomore Gerrick Harmon made his indoor 1000m run debut meaningful. Harmon won his heat comfortably, posting a personal best. Teammate Montay Sprinkle took first in his heat of the 500m run, posting the 5th fastest time on the team this season.
Junior June “Lisa” Foster tied for second place in the 55m dash, not only in a personal best time of 7.51, but in a state championship qualifying time. She will join Steve Stowe in becoming two individual state qualifiers so far.
Junior Calvin Hawkins took second place in his debut in the shot put, while freshman thrower Milizhia Mills threw another personal best by four feet, taking fourth place over all. The most exciting part of the night was seeing all athletes competing, running personal bests, proving that hard work and dedication pays off….GO VIKINGS!
