Ncrunners Elite Holiday Invitational

Posted On: Tuesday, January 08, 2013

NFHS track and field athletes participated in the Ncrunners Elite Holiday Invitational this past December 28-29. Dubbed probably the biggest meet of the season where athletes came from as far away as Michigan, this meet proved to be an important stepping stone towards the state championships in February 2013 for several of our athletes.

Gevontae Hardy, Marvin Fulwood, Brandon Gambrell found themselves on the starting line with some of the best hurdlers in the country. As you can expect in a situation like that, three ran their personal best times, with Marvin Fulwood coming closest to the state championship qualifying time by less than a second. Two of the three hurdlers went on to produce personal best in the 300m dash (M. Fulwood/B.
Gambrell).

Sophomore Gerrick Harmon made his first major invitational meet meaningful. Harmon ran comfortably in the 500m run, posting a personal best by 4 seconds.  He also went on to beat his 1000m best by 2 seconds.

Junior June “Lisa Foster ran for a second place in her heat of the 55m dash prelims, not only in a near personal best time of 7.57, but against a strong field of girls from all over the southeast region.  The 300m dash turned out to be her strongest performance of the meet.  June won her heat in a personal best time of
43.7, besting her last time by one second.  Only .20 seconds separate her from a state championship bid.

Junior Steve Stowe was one of the featured runners of the meet and he proved why.
Just being his second 1000m race of the season, Stowe showed that he is well ahead of where he was when he captured second place at states last year.  In an impressive personal best time of 2:39.06, Steve took second place in what was seen as one of the most exciting races of the meet.  Leading most of the race, Stowe found himself battling to the finish line with a determined Providence HS runner, besting Steve by only .02 seconds for the gold medal.
