NFHS track and field athletes participated in the third of four “Fleet Feet Series” track meets of the 2012-23 indoor season, held at JDL Fast Track, here in Winston-Salem on Tuesday, January 08. Running against teams from all over the Piedmont, The Vikings produced several personal bests and another state championship qualifier.

The boy’s 4 x 400m relay capped off a productive night by remaining undefeated at the series. Pressed hard from the beginning by Parkland, and surprised by the second leg of Josiah Elliot who stretched the lead out some, NF struggled to stay close.  However, at the exchange zone, Parkland runners fumbled their baton pass, giving Gerrick Harmon a chance to capitalize on the mistake.  After that it was over, once Harmon passed the baton to Marvin Fulwood the Vikings were on their way to another 4 x 400m relay win in their third fastest time of the season.

Gevontae Hardy, Marvin Fulwood, and Brandon Gambrell, once again proved to be a powerful hurdle trio.  Capturing first, 4th and 5th places overall, Marvin’s 8.08 hurdle time and first place, made him the third NF track athlete to qualify for a individual event.  Gevontae and Brandon are near the qualifying mark and still have two meets to join their teammate.

Steve Stowe had an exciting night as he came face to face with his tough rival from Parkland, Josiah Elliot, who is currently the top 500m runner in the entire state, and also leads the ranks in the 1000m.  Coming off a brutal win by Josiah over Steve in the 800m invitational, Steve was able to exact some revenge in the 1600m.  It was a tactical race all the way, and it seemed the two were playing a game of chess.  The lead changed several times until Steve surprised Josiah with an early move causing Josiah to expend more energy in catching back up from behind diminishing a typical Josiah finishing surge.  But if you ask Steve, the highlight of the meet for him was winning the 300m dash in a surprising 37.10.

Senior Arthur Carswell and Frosh Michael Blackburn both ended their night with two personal best times in the 1600m and 3200m races.

Other notable performances came from the only two girls that participated. Rosa Martinez won her heat in the 500m, beating her personal best time by 2 seconds.  Her sister Lucia Martinez also ran her personal best time in the 1000m, beating her time by almost 5 seconds.
