NORTH FORSYTH RUNNERS CLAIM TWO AWARDS AT CROSS-COUNTRY INVITATIONAL

Some of the best high school talents in the state met in the Hagan Stone XC Invitational over the weekend in Pleasant Gardens, NC.  The course where the conference championship will be held next Tuesday, made for some 5K fast times, but the big surprise was at the end of the meet when two runners from North received trophies.

Running against over 100 runners, Andy Romero (a sophomore) bested all but four competitors in the Varsity men’s race, taking with him a fifth place trophy.  He ran his season best time for Hagan Stone XC course, shaving 2 minutes off his time and running his second fastest 5K this season.  Of the 33 teams competing, the Viking men (Romero, Diego Garcia, Sammy Garcia, Misael Luis, M. Blackburn, G. Harmon and Juan Perez) took 11th place overall.

Erika Rodas took home one of three trophies in the girl’s JV race out sprinting teamer Marisol Isidor at the last 50m.  Marisol finished second for the Vikings and fourth overall.  Frosh Aylin Sandoval, along with Emili Perez, Leslie Garcia, Lucero Garcia, Karen Romero, Alma Sanchez, while finishing well behind their teammates, shattered their own personal best records by one to four minutes.

North Forsyth’s Inaugural Cross Country Invitational 2013

The meet held Saturday, September 7 at NF cross country course wasn’t the hot ticket over the weekend when it comes to the various meets around the state that day.  However, even with two teams cancelling at the last minute, the North Forsyth men’s and women’s team had a competitive battle with the Walkertown high school Wolf-pack.  The schools split wins with the Viking women besting the Wolf-pack ladies for the first place.

Jasmine Romero finished second behind a game Alexandra Ott, from Walkertown, but managed to best her personal best in the 3.2 mile race by seconds.  Erika Rodas, who was North’s top finisher for North at the city county meet, took third place in a new personal best time.  Overall the Viking ladies took 5 of the 7 medals and a plaque to boot.

The boys lost their bid for a meet title; however they didn’t make it easy for the Wolf-pack men.  Andy Romero finished in first place in a personal best time, but the Wolf-pack did just that and ran in pack formation taking the next four places, giving them a 10 point spread.  North men produced multiple personal records for the course.

Strong Showing for the North Forsyth Vikings Men’s Track and Field Team

A big crowd and a big night at the Scott Brent Invitational (City/County Championship April 12 & 13), all added up to a big confidence boost for the North Forsyth Vikings Track and Field teams.  Running against some of the top schools in the state and county area, North Forsyth boys finished third place with 73 points.  A far cry from the 7th place finish last year.

The performance of the meet for the north boys was in the 4x100m relay, where they emerged winners, coming in seeded 4th at best. The quartet of Adrion Miller, Tyvon Johnson, Gevontae Hardy; and a gutsy performance from senior Markeen Carmichael bested a game Carver and Reagan to win in a 3A Mideast region qualifying time of 43.9.

Marvin Fulwood blasted a regional championship qualifying mark in the 110m hurdles (15.44) after a long absence from that event due to injury.  He finished in 2nd place overall.  Marvin went on to qualify for the 300m hurdle finals in a season best time, only to be sidelined for the finals by a persistent foot injury.   His teammate Gevontae Hardy earned his own regional championship bid by running a personal best time 40.53 in the 300m hurdles followed by Gambrel’s 3rd place in a near personal best time of 40.83.  Eric Cabbell also made the finals in the 110m hurdles but because of the 3 athlete limit did not compete in the finals.

Markeen Carmichael and Trenard “Wu” Alexander won bronze medals in their events as a bonus to the team.  Senior Carmichael took third place in the shot put and 6th place overall in the 100m.  Trenard in his second only long jump competition jumped a near regional mark of 20’6” to take third place.

Adrion Miller (sophomore) and senior Tyvon Johnson both made the 200m finals and earned unexpected points by taking 5th and 6thplace, and helping the 4x200m relay along with Steve Stowe and Brandon Gambrell take a bronze medal and besting the season best time by close to a second.

Steve Stowe (suffering from a knee problem) struggled to a third place finish in the 800m in a near season best time.  He also made the finals of the 400m, but opted not to run it to focus on the 800m.

The North Forsyth Vikings will be heading to Bishop McGuinness HS “Villain’s Relays” on April 20.
