NORTH FORSYTH RUNNERS CLAIM TWO AWARDS AT CROSS-COUNTRY INVITATIONAL

Some of the best high school talents in the state met in the Hagan Stone XC Invitational over the weekend in Pleasant Gardens, NC.  The course where the conference championship will be held next Tuesday, made for some 5K fast times, but the big surprise was at the end of the meet when two runners from North received trophies.

Running against over 100 runners, Andy Romero (a sophomore) bested all but four competitors in the Varsity men’s race, taking with him a fifth place trophy.  He ran his season best time for Hagan Stone XC course, shaving 2 minutes off his time and running his second fastest 5K this season.  Of the 33 teams competing, the Viking men (Romero, Diego Garcia, Sammy Garcia, Misael Luis, M. Blackburn, G. Harmon and Juan Perez) took 11th place overall.

Erika Rodas took home one of three trophies in the girl’s JV race out sprinting teamer Marisol Isidor at the last 50m.  Marisol finished second for the Vikings and fourth overall.  Frosh Aylin Sandoval, along with Emili Perez, Leslie Garcia, Lucero Garcia, Karen Romero, Alma Sanchez, while finishing well behind their teammates, shattered their own personal best records by one to four minutes.

Beeson Invitational 5K “A Big Improvement”

Sophomore Andy Romero and the North Forsyth boys weren’t predicted to finish in the top 20 team finishes, but in a race filled with cheering fans, mud and steep competition they got to the finish in a team overall finish of 13th, at the Beeson Invitational 5K race over the weekend.

Romero, who has been doubling as a starter on the soccer team, gained some respect from more seasoned runners with a strong second loop and finished in 16:59—more than 90 seconds faster than anyone in the last three seasons at North, taking fourth.  For a moment in the first part of the race it appeared that the novice runner had a good shot at winning but there was definitely a strong group of guys up front.  Coming down the home stretch of the fast course, Andy seemed in command of getting through the line in third place, only to be bested by a surprise surge at the last 50m.

Finishing second and third for North were sophomore Diego Garcia and Sammy Garcia, both breaking the 20 minute milestone becoming two of three varsity boys to achieve that this year.  Close to breaking the same milestone were runners Leon Smith, Aldo Lopez, and Misael Luis.  All ran season best times.  Overall, the boys cross country team produced 14 personal records.

For the Lady Vikings, senior Jasmine Romero finished first for North in a personal best time of 23:15, almost a minute faster than her previous best.  After feeling disappointed by her last performance, Romero figured that with a little more patience, her goal of breaking her personal record would depend on staying in front of teammates Zulem Hernandez and freshman Vanessa Herrera.

While Zulem continues to get better, it was Vanessa’s performance that surprised her coaches.  It is hard enough to get out there for the first time in a small meet, but when your first ever high school cross country meet turns out to be one of the largest, you’d expect it to overwhelm a new runner.  Vanessa however showed the maturity of a veteran runner by maintaining her composure and propelling herself to the number three spot on the varsity team.  Overall the girls also produced several personal bests.

North Forsyth’s Inaugural Cross Country Invitational 2013

The meet held Saturday, September 7 at NF cross country course wasn’t the hot ticket over the weekend when it comes to the various meets around the state that day.  However, even with two teams cancelling at the last minute, the North Forsyth men’s and women’s team had a competitive battle with the Walkertown high school Wolf-pack.  The schools split wins with the Viking women besting the Wolf-pack ladies for the first place.

Jasmine Romero finished second behind a game Alexandra Ott, from Walkertown, but managed to best her personal best in the 3.2 mile race by seconds.  Erika Rodas, who was North’s top finisher for North at the city county meet, took third place in a new personal best time.  Overall the Viking ladies took 5 of the 7 medals and a plaque to boot.

The boys lost their bid for a meet title; however they didn’t make it easy for the Wolf-pack men.  Andy Romero finished in first place in a personal best time, but the Wolf-pack did just that and ran in pack formation taking the next four places, giving them a 10 point spread.  North men produced multiple personal records for the course.

The Vikings start out 2013 season with several 3200m personal bests…

NFHS cross-country athletes participated in their first of 5 Invitational meets of the 2013 cross-country season, held at Beeson Park, in Kernersville, NC on Wednesday, Aug. 28. Running against teams from all over the Piedmont, The Vikings posted several personal best times in the 3200m. The boys varsity capped off a productive night by placing 7th place overall, besting Parkland and Glenn.  Last season the boys didn’t place at all in that meet.

Senior Steve Stowe had a modest but helpful debut in a cross-country meet.  His 17th place helped the Vikings fend off determined Parkland and Glenn.  Senior Leon Smith however showed the most improvement from his performance last year.  He was North’s second finisher, shattering his personal best time by 3:00.  Michael Blackburn, James Gray, Aldo Lopez, Misael Manuel and Hunter Pless, all posted personal best times.

Junior, Erika Rodas, made her second time at the invitational meet meaningful. Rodas was North’s first finisher in the 3200m event comfortably posting a personal best time 16:00, shattering her PR by over two minutes.

Strong Showing for the North Forsyth Vikings Men’s Track and Field Team

A big crowd and a big night at the Scott Brent Invitational (City/County Championship April 12 & 13), all added up to a big confidence boost for the North Forsyth Vikings Track and Field teams.  Running against some of the top schools in the state and county area, North Forsyth boys finished third place with 73 points.  A far cry from the 7th place finish last year.

The performance of the meet for the north boys was in the 4x100m relay, where they emerged winners, coming in seeded 4th at best. The quartet of Adrion Miller, Tyvon Johnson, Gevontae Hardy; and a gutsy performance from senior Markeen Carmichael bested a game Carver and Reagan to win in a 3A Mideast region qualifying time of 43.9.

Marvin Fulwood blasted a regional championship qualifying mark in the 110m hurdles (15.44) after a long absence from that event due to injury.  He finished in 2nd place overall.  Marvin went on to qualify for the 300m hurdle finals in a season best time, only to be sidelined for the finals by a persistent foot injury.   His teammate Gevontae Hardy earned his own regional championship bid by running a personal best time 40.53 in the 300m hurdles followed by Gambrel’s 3rd place in a near personal best time of 40.83.  Eric Cabbell also made the finals in the 110m hurdles but because of the 3 athlete limit did not compete in the finals.

Markeen Carmichael and Trenard “Wu” Alexander won bronze medals in their events as a bonus to the team.  Senior Carmichael took third place in the shot put and 6th place overall in the 100m.  Trenard in his second only long jump competition jumped a near regional mark of 20’6” to take third place.

Adrion Miller (sophomore) and senior Tyvon Johnson both made the 200m finals and earned unexpected points by taking 5th and 6thplace, and helping the 4x200m relay along with Steve Stowe and Brandon Gambrell take a bronze medal and besting the season best time by close to a second.

Steve Stowe (suffering from a knee problem) struggled to a third place finish in the 800m in a near season best time.  He also made the finals of the 400m, but opted not to run it to focus on the 800m.

The North Forsyth Vikings will be heading to Bishop McGuinness HS “Villain’s Relays” on April 20.

Gambrell and Stowe Bring Back Gold….

North Forsyth Viking’s Brandon Gambrell won the battle of the hurdle stars (at least the ones that showed up) at the Winston Salem State College High School Invitational, Saturday April 6, and the 3

Mideast Region got a new 300m hurdle leader.

The junior hurdler was at his fastest in the heats, where he sped a PR 40.69 to take the gold medal.  Steve Stowe continued his climb in the 800m ranks by narrowly beating Knightdale’s Henry Keidy for the gold medal and running a season best time of 1:59.35.
As an added surprise to the day Markeen Carmichael took second in the shot put, earning important points to North’s 4th place meet finish.  He assisted the 4x100m relay (Adrion Miller, Tyvone Johnson and Trenard Alexander) to a 4th place finish.
Other highlights of the men’s team 4th place finish were respectable finishes in the 4x200m relay (Gambrell, Hardy, Stowe, and Johnson), and 4th place in the 4×400 relay (Hardy, Gambrell, Fulwood and Stowe).
The Men’s and Women’s track teams will be competing on April 12-13in the Scott Brent Invitational (City/County Championship) being held at MT. Tabor H.S.

Rewards All Around For North Forsyth Track Team…

The North Forsyth Vikings Track Team was able to celebrate a
hugely successful trip to The Mighty Vikings Invitational meet in Danbury, NC Saturday, March 23.  Never before (since Michael Smith became head Coach) has so many North Forsyth Vikings placed so well in the top 8 at any meet.  Perhaps the only negative note was the boys’ team narrowly losing to South Stokes by 6 points
for the team title.

The number of victories was no.1 in the teams short history with Coach Smith.  The number of medals No. 1 behind that, but what was also impressive was the depth of the team’s performance.

The hurdle duo, Gevontae hardy and Brandon Gambrell were two of the revelations of the meet.  The two hurdlers did nothing but confirm their status as two favorites to take a conference title this year.  The pair once again split the wins.  Gevontae got
the better of Gambrell in the 110m high hurdles and went sub-16 by almost duplicating his Marvin Ridge effort of 15.8.  The pair went at it again in the 300m hurdles. Gambrell taking advantage of a stutter step by Gevontae on the curve edged his team mate for first place and a new meet record of 41.4.

Junior Steve Stowe came out on top of a very entertaining 1600m race, which saw the lead change more than a few times with West Stokes Jason Barber, for another personal best time of 4:36.  He also ran the 800m against a game Bryan
Brackney of Watauga High School, and finished second in a season best 2:04.

Individually, the NFHS sprinters had a challenging but overall successful day.  Senior Patrick Green made his track debut meaningful. He and teammate Adrion Miller placed 2nd and 3rd in the 100m finals and along with Trenard Alexander and Marvin  Fulwood went on to win the boy’s 4x100m relay by almost one second.  Tyvone Johnson, a senior, also made his track debut narrowly missing the finals for the 100m; he went on to take third place in the 200m dash. He along with Gambrell, Hardy and Fulwood won the boy’s 4x200m relay in a meet record time of 1:32.5.

The boys’ team came up short in sweeping the relay events, losing the 4x800m relay earlier, but was able to dominate the 4x400m relay winning in a 3a Mid-east regional qualifying time of 3:32.

From a broader perspective, perhaps the star of the boys’ team was the gutsy performance from senior hurdler Marvin Fulwood; who is currently healing from a serious bone bruise on his foot.  Fulwood not only helped North win 3 or the
four relays, he also placed fourth in the open 400m dash in a season best time,
followed by 5th place finisher and teammate Gerrick Harmon.

On the girls’ side, junior June Lisa Foster had looked the underdog for the 100m and 200m dash, but proved the contrary.  She ran her second fastest time this season in a winning effort for the 100m title. Her time of 12.7 shattered the 3 year old meet record.   June went on to take second in the 200m dash behind Shakai Ward, of Elkin HS in another season best time of 26.8.

With the help of teammates Sykonza Evans (5thplace 100m, and 6th place 200m); Tatiyanna Henry (7thplace 200m) and Janneca Williams; the NF girls took a respectable 5th place overall finish.  The girls managed to win both the 4x100m and 4x400m (June Lisa Foster, Brandi Gray, Rosa Martinez, and Sykonza Evans) in season best times.
Daishya Duffy placed 4th in the shot put and 6th in the discus adding much needed points to the team total.

The Vikings will be competing at the WSSU High School Invitational in Winston-Salem, April 6, 2013.

North Forsyth Sweeps the hurdles at Marvin Ridge Invitational …

NFHS track and field athletes participated in the Marvin Ridge Invitational over the weekend and left a lasting impression on the crowed with the sweep of the hurdle races. Junior’s Gevontae Hardy and Brandon Gambrell split the hurdle events with wins in the 110m high hurdles and 300m low hurdle races on a very windy day.  Hardy began the sweep by winning the 110m hurdles in 15.7 seconds.  He not only walked away with the gold medal, he was also awarded the “Eric Streeter Award along with Parkland’s Ebony Williams for the outstanding hurdlers male/female.  Brandon Gambrell probably had his best day ever as a hurdler.  After posting a second place finish in the 110m hurdles, Gambrell went on to win the 300m hurdles in a Regional Championship qualifying time of 41.35 and a new personal best.

June Lisa Foster remained consistent in her quest for a state championship title in May.  She took the bronze medal in a highly contested 100m race, running another personal best time of 12.6.  She also helped the girl’s 4x100m relay squad that included Tatiyanna Henry, Janneca Williams and Sykonza Evans, in winning their heat in a season best time 53.3, edging closer to a regional qualifying time.  Other personal best times were produced by Rosa Martinez in the 400m, running almost 5 seconds faster, Tatiyanna Henry in the 100m dash.
North’s next meet will be Thursday, March 21 against Ledford and Southern Guilford.  And the team is getting ready to compete for the team title this weekend at the N. Stokes Viking Invitational.

NF opens the 2013 Outdoor Season

June Lisa Foster scored what would be the girl’s only points at the Southeast Guilford Falcons Invitational relays, Saturday, March 8; held at Southeast Guilford in Greensboro, NC.  “Lisa” ran a season best 12.77 in the 100m, in just .01 of her personal best, taking the gold metal at the outdoor track and field team’s opening meet.  She opens up her season with a 3a Mideast Regional qualifying time, to be held in May.

Gevontae Hardy took silver in the men’s 110m high hurdles in a season best time of 16.14, .01 off his personal best time last year.  He also helped North Forsyth , with team mates Gerrick Harmon, Brandon Gambrell, and Steve Stowe (who ran a personal best in the 1600m earlier that day); taking the gold medal in the Sprint Medley Relay.
