North Forsyth High School Indoor Track and Field Team concluded the regular season,

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – North Forsyth High School Indoor Track and Field Team concluded the regular season, wrapping up with June Lisa Foster running a state qualifying mark in the 300m dash over the weekend. As part of Head Coach Michael Smith’s strategy of putting NFHS track and field back on the map, the last two meets has paid off. Steve Stowe in a different than normal event last Tuesday ran the 500m for the second time this season. Stowe fared well, notching a state qualifying and season best time. The 4 x 400m men’s relay ran a season best 3:32.03 in a losing effort to Mt. Tabor at the last “Fleet Feet Series, the fifth fastest 1A/2A/3A time of the season in the event. Senior Marvin Fulwood- who is the first Viking to qualify for states since the 1980s in the 55m high hurdles- bested his own personal best time, as he ran a 7.87. Fulwood’s time is just off the East Rowan’s third seeded Hunter Walker. Teammates Gevontae Hardy and Brandon Gambrell crossed the line in the 55m hurdles their last regular season meet in 8.35 and 8.37, respectably, falling just .20 seconds short from qualifying for states; nevertheless, both will join Stowe and Fulwood in trying to win the 4 x 400m relay at states.

The Vikings posts More Personal Bests, and has another individual state qualifier…

NFHS track and field athletes participated in the third of four “Fleet Feet Series” track meets of the 2012-23 indoor season, held at JDL Fast Track, here in Winston-Salem on Tuesday, January 08. Running against teams from all over the Piedmont, The Vikings produced several personal bests and another state championship qualifier.

The boy’s 4 x 400m relay capped off a productive night by remaining undefeated at the series. Pressed hard from the beginning by Parkland, and surprised by the second leg of Josiah Elliot who stretched the lead out some, NF struggled to stay close.  However, at the exchange zone, Parkland runners fumbled their baton pass, giving Gerrick Harmon a chance to capitalize on the mistake.  After that it was over, once Harmon passed the baton to Marvin Fulwood the Vikings were on their way to another 4 x 400m relay win in their third fastest time of the season.

Gevontae Hardy, Marvin Fulwood, and Brandon Gambrell, once again proved to be a powerful hurdle trio.  Capturing first, 4th and 5th places overall, Marvin’s 8.08 hurdle time and first place, made him the third NF track athlete to qualify for a individual event.  Gevontae and Brandon are near the qualifying mark and still have two meets to join their teammate.

Steve Stowe had an exciting night as he came face to face with his tough rival from Parkland, Josiah Elliot, who is currently the top 500m runner in the entire state, and also leads the ranks in the 1000m.  Coming off a brutal win by Josiah over Steve in the 800m invitational, Steve was able to exact some revenge in the 1600m.  It was a tactical race all the way, and it seemed the two were playing a game of chess.  The lead changed several times until Steve surprised Josiah with an early move causing Josiah to expend more energy in catching back up from behind diminishing a typical Josiah finishing surge.  But if you ask Steve, the highlight of the meet for him was winning the 300m dash in a surprising 37.10.

Senior Arthur Carswell and Frosh Michael Blackburn both ended their night with two personal best times in the 1600m and 3200m races.

Other notable performances came from the only two girls that participated. Rosa Martinez won her heat in the 500m, beating her personal best time by 2 seconds.  Her sister Lucia Martinez also ran her personal best time in the 1000m, beating her time by almost 5 seconds.

Ncrunners Elite Holiday Invitational

NFHS track and field athletes participated in the Ncrunners Elite Holiday Invitational this past December 28-29. Dubbed probably the biggest meet of the season where athletes came from as far away as Michigan, this meet proved to be an important stepping stone towards the state championships in February 2013 for several of our athletes.

Gevontae Hardy, Marvin Fulwood, Brandon Gambrell found themselves on the starting line with some of the best hurdlers in the country. As you can expect in a situation like that, three ran their personal best times, with Marvin Fulwood coming closest to the state championship qualifying time by less than a second. Two of the three hurdlers went on to produce personal best in the 300m dash (M. Fulwood/B.
Gambrell).

Sophomore Gerrick Harmon made his first major invitational meet meaningful. Harmon ran comfortably in the 500m run, posting a personal best by 4 seconds.  He also went on to beat his 1000m best by 2 seconds.

Junior June “Lisa” Foster ran for a second place in her heat of the 55m dash prelims, not only in a near personal best time of 7.57, but against a strong field of girls from all over the southeast region.  The 300m dash turned out to be her strongest performance of the meet.  June won her heat in a personal best time of
43.7, besting her last time by one second.  Only .20 seconds separate her from a state championship bid.

Junior Steve Stowe was one of the featured runners of the meet and he proved why.
Just being his second 1000m race of the season, Stowe showed that he is well ahead of where he was when he captured second place at states last year.  In an impressive personal best time of 2:39.06, Steve took second place in what was seen as one of the most exciting races of the meet.  Leading most of the race, Stowe found himself battling to the finish line with a determined Providence HS runner, besting Steve by only .02 seconds for the gold medal.
